A Carpet for Her Feet

It was 1963, just over a year since my first stay in the Ashram. Anne (now Anie) and I (then Richard) were living in New York. I wanted to offer something to Mother and felt a strong inspiration to 'hook' a carpet for Her in Her symbol that She might use for Her Feet. Not being very gifted artistically I thought, "This I can possibly do for Mother".

I studied the technique of hooking rugs and collected the materials I would need, the finest wool in skeins of white and blue, monks cloth, a hooking needle and wood for a frame which I would build.

I purchased all the materials, made the frame, drew Mother's symbol on the cloth, stretched it over the frame and began hooking. Anne helped me with the hooking.

A feeling of deep joy and gratitude accompanied my work and I prayed to Mother that this offering be a living symbol of my offering and surrender to Her and Sri Aurobindo.

A wave of intense joy and gratitude flooded my being on receipt of Amrita's letter below.
